YegnaClub vs. Rakuten vs. Honey: What's Different?

If you are familiar with cashback and coupon apps, you have probably heard of Rakuten (formerly Ebates) and Honey (now part of PayPal). Both are excellent tools that millions of people use to save money when shopping online. So why did we build YegnaClub, and what makes it different?

What Rakuten Does Well

Rakuten is one of the most established cashback platforms in the United States. It partners with thousands of retailers and offers straightforward cashback on qualifying purchases. When you shop through Rakuten, you earn a percentage of your purchase back as cash, which Rakuten pays out quarterly via check or PayPal. The rates are competitive, the retailer selection is broad, and the platform is well-built.

For someone whose primary goal is to save money on their own purchases, Rakuten is a solid choice.

What Honey Does Well

Honey, now integrated into PayPal, started as a browser extension that automatically finds and applies coupon codes at checkout. Over time, it expanded to include a rewards program called Honey Gold, where you earn points on purchases that can be redeemed for gift cards. Honey's strength is in its automation. The browser extension works in the background, and you do not have to think about it much.

For someone who wants passive savings and coupon automation, Honey is convenient.

Where YegnaClub Is Different

YegnaClub operates on the same fundamental model as Rakuten: affiliate cashback. We earn commissions when you shop through our links, and we share those commissions with you. The commission rates from retailers are similar because we work with the same affiliate networks. Where YegnaClub diverges is in what happens with those earnings.

1. Purpose-Built for the Diaspora

Rakuten and Honey are general-purpose tools designed for any American consumer. YegnaClub is specifically designed for the Ethiopian diaspora community. This is not just branding. It affects the product at every level. Our commission split is structured so that the largest share (60%) flows to a Family Balance that is specifically designed for sending money to recipients in Ethiopia. The platform is built around the remittance use case from the ground up.

2. The Family Balance

Neither Rakuten nor Honey has a concept of a "family balance" or built-in remittance. With those platforms, you earn cashback for yourself, and if you want to send money home, you handle that separately through a service like WorldRemit or Remitly. With YegnaClub, the send-home flow is integrated directly into the platform. You add a recipient, your Family Balance grows automatically as you shop, and when you are ready, you initiate a transfer without leaving YegnaClub.

3. Community, Not Just a Tool

Cashback apps are transactional by nature. You use them, you earn, you move on. YegnaClub is building something more than a tool. It is building a community hub where diaspora members can see the collective impact of their shopping, share the platform with family and friends, and eventually participate in community-oriented features that go beyond individual savings.

4. The Commission Split

Rakuten keeps a portion of the commission and pays out the rest to you. The exact split is not publicly disclosed, but industry estimates suggest Rakuten keeps roughly 30% to 50% of the commission. YegnaClub is transparent about its split: 60% Family Balance, 15% User Credit, 25% platform fee. You receive 75% of the total commission, with the majority earmarked for family.

Can You Use YegnaClub Alongside Rakuten or Honey?

Here is an important note: you generally cannot stack affiliate cashback. If you click through both Rakuten and YegnaClub for the same purchase, only one will get credit (usually the last one clicked). So for any given purchase, you need to choose one. We would, of course, love for you to choose YegnaClub, but we also believe in being honest: if a particular retailer offers a significantly higher cashback rate on another platform and you need the money for yourself rather than sending it home, use whatever works best for you.

However, if your goal is to support family in Ethiopia through your regular shopping, YegnaClub is the only platform built specifically for that purpose.

The Bottom Line

Rakuten and Honey are great products. We respect what they have built. But they serve a different purpose. YegnaClub is not trying to compete with them on feature-for-feature cashback. We are solving a different problem: how to make the Ethiopian diaspora's everyday spending work double duty, saving you money and supporting your family. If that resonates with you, YegnaClub is your platform.
